Where does the name Tall Poppy come from?

“Tall poppy” is an expression, common in Australia, that refers to a person who stands above the rest by virtue of their vision and work ethic. When we started talking about what we wanted the café to be like, words like “community”, “quality” and “value” kept popping up. We wanted our restaurant to be more than just a place where you could get a good cup of coffee and a tasty sandwich. We hoped that by planting our own organic produce for the kitchen, and supplementing with locally sourced items like cheese and meat and honey and tea, we could improve the quality of life in our community. By feeding our customers wholesome and wholly satisfying food, by supporting the local economy financially, and by creating an environment where folks could gather and share in the bounty we have in Prince Edward County.

We also stand tall for our planet. We choose environmentally friendly products and practices, even though it usually costs more to do so. We encourage our patrons to do the same, by offering a discount for those who BYO Containers.  The direct trade coffee we serve is grown with care by farmers who are compensated fairly for their efforts.

Tall Poppy Café is family-friendly, eco-friendly, and vegetarian-friendly.

It takes commitment to be a tall poppy. But when you’re passionate about what you do, how can you choose to be anything else?
